A Major Clarification on Authority Loophole – And a Crucial Update…

July 16th, 2009 · 105 Comments

Hey guys…

Ever had one of those days where you so busy that you completely forgot about something ultra-important?

Like going to the airport in a rush – and forgetting your passport? Or maybe forgetting about an anniversary, etc?

I’m guessing you have…

Guess what?

I just had a big-time “Blonde Moment” (no offense, blondes…) this week. I completely forgot to make some CRUCIAL additions to the Authority Loophole user guide, simply because during a product launch, you’re simultaneously scrambling to do a thousand things at once…

…and sometimes seemingly “small” things get overlooked.

So it’s totally my fault – and I apologize for the confusion.

Here’s What Got Messed Up:

Authority Loophole actually operates in TWO MODES:

1) Completely White-Hat

2) Gray-Hat

It was Dave’s “job” (which he completed, and very well) to create the content for the gray hat usage of the software. And it was MY responsibility (which I FORGOT about entirely) to add in the sections about the White Hat mode.

So the user guide and training info you’ve received so far has only covered the gray-hat strategy.

Which – obviously – has caused a lot of confusion and even a bit of uproar.

Rightly so, since AL is marketed as being legit and ethical – which it is, along with a gray-hat option for users who don’t mind pushing the envelope…

—————————————————–

Here’s the “REAL” User Guide – The Way It Should Have Been the First Time:

AUTHORITY LOOPHOLE USER GUIDE

—————————————————–

In addition, Dave has also just created a video that covers the white-hat strategy in more detail. He didn’t have to do this (it was also my responsibility), but did so in the interest of time, and to cover my butt, because I am an idiot: Authority Loophole Best Practices

Once again – this was totally my fault, and something “small” that I had totally forgotten amidst the craziness of the launch. I’m very sorry about the confusion…

-Chris

P.S. No, this isn’t some ass-covering attempt, or some kind of “controversy” tactic.

In fact, for those who may be a bit suspicious about the legimitacy of my bad memory – here is the pre-launch “JV page” I’d personally sent to over 200+ affiliates and partners well over a week ago, which clearly states the 2 modes of operation of Authority Loophole…

http://chrisrempel.com/authority-jv.html

I have hundreds of people who can back that up.

The bottom-line is that I simply forgot about this, and it’s had some consequences which I am now attempting to confront and address.

All I know is that I am running with this AFAP. This fits with what I’ve been learning and makes sense.
Didn’t seem grey to me, but what do I know.
I think it’s great! Thank you.

Everyone makes mistakes.. heck I’ve made a lot more than few in my lifetime.

When a mistake happens and the person comes clean about it – instead of trying to cover things up – it just shows their character.

No worries mate – thanks for the new user guide! =)

Chris have any of the “real” top commentors ever complained or caused problems for you or anyone you know after using the “grey hat” method.

  • 5 Domains at Retail // Jul 16, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Ah everyone makes mistakes :) I actually found the loophole days before it was launched and although I havent used it yet, I will be doing the white hat way for my sites.

Possibly dwelve a bit into the gray hat to see if it works for my msn loophole blogs and gets them ranked higher. Thanks for the clarification anyways :)

I had hesitation in using placing comments under a real persons name but a generic did not seem a big issue. I had already started using the program to find sites that I would benefit from leaving comments on and that alone makes the program very useful even without using the comment tag.

  • 22 Mike // Jul 16, 2009 at 2:50 pm

I watched Dave’s video (where you seemed to be soft-pedalling on the promoted idea of getting ‘authority’ links) and sent an email to ask whether you’d received a lot of flak on the grounds of the ethics of the method. It seems to me that just using the ‘whiter than white’ method won’t get me an authority link, which was the whole idea and which is the name of the software isn’t it? Simply posting to blogs isn’t going to shoot me up the Google rankings is it?

  • 23 Teri // Jul 16, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Thanks for clearing up! I wondered about it?

  • 24 Tony MarinoPhoenix Strategic Internet Marketing // Jul 16, 2009 at 2:54 pm

    Chris,
Thank you for posting this and clarifying the “White Hat” use of this tool. I was totally convinced I had entered the “Twilight Zone.” Chris Rempel, good guy, promotes questionable method to get backlinks. Before anyone slams my use of “questionable”, Dave uses the word “Hijack and hijacking” in his video many times. And there is no use of the word “hijack” that makes it a positive experience. The smart and ethical use of this, adding valuable content to a blog and leaving your link, is quite smart.

Hi Mike, You can find authority sites in white hat (comments) mode, the software is still seeking them out. There really is no difference in that regard. The quality of links won’t change in white hat mode.. – Dave K

Not a problem. I saw Dave’s video earlier and it did a fine job of clarifying the issue. That was awful “white” of you guys……:)

  • 32 ForexReview // Jul 16, 2009 at 3:33 pm

One of the first blogs I went to with AL had a note for commentors saying “If you’re using programs like Authority Loophole, please PISS OFF AND DIE!!” Yikes.

It’s good to be aware that you’ll inevitably be pissing some people off with this program and you need to realize you’re taking some risks. I will be using it only on sites that I can’t afford to lose goodwill from.

  • 35 Dave // Jul 16, 2009 at 3:46 pm

    @Terry

I agree, but I also think this is a VERY hard way to get somewhat questionable links.

    1) Run software to find potential sites (ok saves time)
    2) Post valuable comment on page… got any sofware that does that? Heck that’s where the real work is.

  • 36 Daniel // Jul 16, 2009 at 3:49 pm

Everybody makes mistakes. Fortunately I figured out the white-hat way for using the software, as did some other people; but already I’ve seen people saying AL is nothing but deceitful etc etc…

I hope they either figure out the white-hat way for using the software, or see this post.

    Thanks

  • 40 Carlos // Jul 16, 2009 at 4:00 pm

    Hey Chris,

One downfall about this free linking method is that the anchor text is the website URL or name… so even though you can get a PR5 link it will not have the same SEO value as having the same link but with keyword rich anchor text…

Is there a way to use this method using any desired anchor text link?

    Thanks!

    Carlos

  • 41 Enigma // Jul 16, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Great Chris, funny thing is, as I watched the video yesterday I kept thinking; “this would be great if it identified top commenter boxes with low comment #s. Once identified, we can even get an anchor link in as a top comment “name”… COOL

  • 42 Mari Ann // Jul 16, 2009 at 4:05 pm

I’ve had my VA working on this for 2 days… only problem is that it seems everyone is finding the same sites! And, I had her verify that she is including the extra search term.

What I’ve found when I go back and look at the places she left comments is that someone else also found most of these, and her top comment is now replaced by someone else’s.

I’ve had her try a lot of different search terms, and also starting at various pages.

Have decided this is not a good ROI for me.

Interested to hear if others are having similar results.

    Hey Chris,

everyone makes mistakes and this was a mistake.

However I actually was never comfortable hi-jacking someone elses name to gain a link. So I inadvertantly adopted the best Practice by default. I just used the tool to find legitimate highranking blogs to post comments on.

Which is a legitimate if somewhat time consuming endeavour but worth doing.

So thanks for the Honesty and the tool of course.

    Hi Chris

Just a side note first for Carlos… I have followed Chris for a number of years, bought hundreds of dollars of products. The last few reports I got from Chris helped set up and fix a few sites. Maybe AND I did say MAYBE if you had bought AND READ them you would possibly not have asked the question.

You do not have to use your name. You can use a site name keyword etc. Just take my name for example. Yes it is my real name and yes click the link I have my own site. Not much yet but I am getting there.

Ok Chris Thanks for sharing the fact I am not the only one in this boat. Am going back to work now thanks AGAIN.

    Hey Chris,

Of course we trust you :-)

Although, you’re explanation at the beginning of the white hat instructions does read suspiciously like my comment on the Q&A thread a couple of days ago ;-) I said “a more ethical approach would be to use your own name and comment on enough posts to earn a place on the Top Commenters list – often that only takes 3 or 4 comments”

Anyway, I’m personally glad you’re now promoting the white method. It seems to me that it won’t take many people using the grey hat method to stop bloggers using Top Commenters altogether.

@Mike the white hat method will still get you an authority link, it just takes a bit more effort.

@Terry Google won’t ignore the TC plug-in, because it can’t ‘see’ the TC plug-in. It sees only the parsed HTML and a link is a link is a link.

@Carlos Anchor text in links is much less important than it used to be, largely because of Google bombing and mass-spamming using anchor text links. But hey, if you don’t want a PR5 link…

Since these people will be too busy complaining; good news for the rest of us then :)

  • 56 Scott // Jul 16, 2009 at 5:15 pm

Personally when I watched Dave’s video yesterday I instantly made a connection with rising your own name to the top.

Sure the grey hate method is faster but it is also more prone to having your link over written and it also does not allow you to use the anchor text you want.

If you do your own comments not only can you choose your own anchor text but you will not be crossing any type of ethical line.

Personally I plan to use both as it doesn’t bother me to post as someone elses’s name because who’s to say I don’t always post as say “Dave K”

  • 57 Doug Younkin // Jul 16, 2009 at 5:36 pm

I guess this was just a case of a loophole in the loophole. ;) But seriously, there is room for improvement in everything, even when you have remembered to include it all. So what, this is just version 1.1 now. There will still be updates as time goes by, with new loopholes in the search engines or holes that have been plugged and are no longer effective. But as you’ve always said, Chris, build visitor trust and customer loyalty by being transparent with integrity. You have done that and you don’t need to beat yourself up any more. Let’s get on with it. Thanks!

I came across one site that stated that if one is using the Authority Loophole method to post to go away and die. But that was referring to the ‘grey’ method I suspect. Doubt if it would be a problem with the ‘white’ method as it is really not an exploit at all but a genuine posting which heaps of people leave.

like this one. for example. :)

  • 60 Work At Home Truth // Jul 16, 2009 at 6:13 pm

I have to admit that I’ve been a huge fan of Chris’ for a long time – and still am, but I just get queasy thinking about the “grey-hat” use of AL and if I pushed it to my list of IM newbies it would NOT be a good thing for my reputation – guaranteed – however, I’m probably in a different position than other list owners because of those particular site demographics.

That being said this is certainly different than most other greyhat/blackhat techniques, because in this case you are essentially stealing someone else’s asset.

This will be an interesting one to watch as I’m sure both Chris and Dave knew there was a potentially big reputation risk release releasing something like this.

Thanks for your honesty Chris. I know from the past that you guys tell people about the grey in order for people to know the boundary line, not that you advocate or promote grey tactics.

As you know, time, patience and a few good white-hat strategies is really all you need to help build a strong base for your website or blog.

I’m not a big fan of grey-hat. Google is a tough critic these days and grey often turns to black which can spell lights out for your site.

Best to play it safe and stick to the white-hat. You’ll get there soon enough and you’ll feel better about yourself when you do.

    All the best!

Took me about 2 minutes to figure out there were already a bunch of pissed off blog owners not happy with this approach (and Naming Authority Loophole by name). Took another minute and a half to realize that most of the blogs I was looking at I could get onto the top commenters list by posting 3-5 posts. Easy Cheesy… Authority Loophole still rocks just as a data fileter! How else would you find all these blogs that share the link love?

    Hi Chris,

Truth is, I live by three rules. Whatever I (1) Think, (2) Feel and (3) Do are completely, absolutely 100% my responsibility.

I appreciate your humility, however, unless I was born in a barn (and I wasn’t), I knew the first time I used the software that it was Gray Hat. I did it anyway. My choice. You didn’t bend my arm and have nothing to apologize for.

I challenge anyone who’s used the software the way Dave originally taught us to say, “Boy, I didn’t know.” I don’t think so.

    Blessings,

    Dave Turo-Shields

I think that Authority Loophole is a great idea for responsible people but I think since this launched the asshole spammers have hit many of these sites over and over trying to get their links on authority sites, hence blog owners are getting wise to the “hack”. Stick to white hat tactics as mentioned you can use it as a great sorting tool.

  • 71 California Commercial Lenders // Jul 17, 2009 at 12:36 am

No big deal. I just see high PR blogs already trying to put an end to this!

  • 72 Stefan // Jul 17, 2009 at 1:57 am

I doubt effectiveness of the ‘grey-hat’ version of the strategy for 2 reasons:

    1. Ranking For Irrelevant keywords
When you overwrite someone’s name you will be pointing to your site with the name of that person.
But you don’t want to rank your ‘dog training’ site for the keywords ‘John Doe’ (the name of the original top commentator)

    2. Your comment will be replaced by the next guy who will leave a comment. This may be another authority loopholer – or most likely – the original top commentator who is leaving his next comment – which will sooner or later happen if he is a top commentator.

    Stefan

  • 73 Paul B // Jul 17, 2009 at 2:25 am

The grey hat method has p!ssed of a lot of webmasters, myself included. Even the white hat method can be harder than you think (I always get suspicous of a group of comments made within minutes of each other from the same visitor). People might be best just to use the software to find the blogs and then go back and naturally visit them over time leaving comments naturally.

@Stefan – I don’t see the difference between having your own name as anchor text and having someone else’s name. Unless, of course, you plan on using keyword as your name. If so, a number of bloggers, particularly those with high PR pages are becoming unhappy about that and some are automatically refusing to approve comments with keywords as a name, so be careful.

And, yes number 2 is an issue of you use the grey hat method. But if you go the white hat route and keep commenting regularly, you’ll stay at the top of the pile.

As Tom Armstrong said, above, AL rocks even if you only use it as a data filter.

I love the Tool, as it allows you to use any of my advanced search strings and serves results with nofollow and pr data.

    I Hate!
The grey hat video. It’s more than grey. It’s the dirtiest I have felt in a long time online.

These ‘Top Commentators’ on PR=5+ sites are invested and well respected members of a community that have earned their links.

And in just one day, all of Chris Rempel’s ‘respected VIPs’ are sent in as an army of impersonators, stealing people’s identities.

    I HATE!
…that this filthy tactic has already ruined the long term ‘legitimate’ way to do it.

The webmasters are already removing the links completely from targeted ‘top commentator links’ , shutting down the plugin and blocking comments. I saw one that has paid someone to hack their plugin and add a no-follow, rendering it useless to the legit white hat approach of finding a dozen or more blogs worthy of your time as a member of their community.

It only takes 2-3 abuses for a moderator to adapt and there you are leaving a trace directly to your website and labeling yourself as a Spammer.

This is not white and grey… Don’t kid yourself. The grey is so black even the white bits are getting tainted.

  • 82 Adam // Jul 17, 2009 at 12:02 pm

The user guide shows the search query string being used to find these Top Commenters blogs. Doesn’t that make the software pretty useless? I mean I can just search Google myself using the string.

  • 83 admin // Jul 17, 2009 at 12:47 pm

@Adam – it simultaneously searches all 3 search engines for you.

    It’s also completely free.

  • 84 Michael // Jul 17, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Putting aside the “grey vs white” controversy. Let’s say you go grey hat , and scam “Joe Blow’s” links on a high PR site. Now, Joe Blow is a frequent commentor…so Joe is back online tomorrow, or next week, and even if he doesn’t notice what you’ve done, he innocently makes a comment…and bam, your links are all gone again.
…Am I right, or am I missing something??

Just as well you sent us this reminder. I han’t tried mine out yet. Suppose it’s time to give it a test run

At a glance though It all looked white hat to me. well.. maybe a very faint shade of grey

    Thanks for the software

  • 86 JD (1to1million.com) // Jul 17, 2009 at 7:39 pm

@Adam It is just a search tool/filter… It’s best feature is that it allows you to enter your own strings and returns results with PageRank and NoFollow information.

@Michael Yep, but in my experience the big(many posts) PR=5 sites keep appearing when you just use simple one word keyword searches react well before your hijack gets overwritten.
    Eg. http://redlegnation.com/
I have done searches for ‘cleaning’ ‘make money’ ‘dance’ and more and this site sticks out because of the High PR.
They adapted pretty fast and now remove the link from hijacked names until the guy with the real IP/email reposts.

It’s also pretty easy to add a commenters IP to the Block list, which could ruin your ability to rightfully earn a place on the top commenters list (valuable if you have a baseball related site).

Big valuable sites, with ‘top commenters’ into the (2000) comment level, know and respect the people, who’s identity you are stealing.

They will usually react before the real commenter re-posts.

Shortcuts, cheats and exploits only last for long as they are kept secret!!!

  • 87 Arrrghhhh!! // Jul 17, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Your grey hat just killed the white hat!

I have one great site where I was willing to put the time in – 20 posts over 30 days – to get a themed PR4 backlink via the top comments widget.

But all you spammers just killed that idea…

“We are getting a lot of manual spam lately, people using my top commenter’s list and using names from it and spamming to companies sites. I will delete ALL comments which are using company names, fake names or company’s web links. ”

Now your comment only gets posted if you use a real first name, a personal blog link only.

…and this is happening everywhere I go using your great tool with white hat intentions.

    Wasting my valuable time!

  • 88 Junior // Jul 18, 2009 at 1:47 pm

    hey chris

btw, if promoting a mini site, how many links from those blogs then considered enough?

I mean how many different blogs must we find then considered sufficient, besides the more is merrier idea.

    thanks

Still strugling a little on the traffic side of things, but I think I’m getting there slowly. Authority Loophole is a big help. I’m in the process of building another conduit site which is in a high-ticket market that caters to list-building; so I’m considering building my first list. I need to give your Rapid Profit List formula another read-through :)

  • 92 Greg // Jul 18, 2009 at 11:13 pm

    @Junior,

How many links is dependant upon how competitive your minisite niche happens to be.

Usually if there is good money to be made in a niche, there is good competition. SO if there is ridiculous amounts of money to be made, there are usually ridiculous amounts of seo work that need to be done to top it.

Going after local terms, ie “divorce attorney salt lake city” is going to be easier than “divorce attorney beverly hills” since both cities are going to have differning needs in this niche.

It always comes back to the QUALITY of your back links. 10 high Google PR links are going to far out do, 100 low PR links.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Greg

  • 93 Frank // Jul 19, 2009 at 3:45 am

I would not risk the 100% BLACK HAT technique on any authority site that I own.

What your doing is Identity Theft and Spam and then leaving a trace to your website.

I saw one PR7 site that has a whole new set of stolen links every day (watched it over 3 day period). So you can definitely add ‘Waste of Time” to this technique.

I checked out 15 of the websites and man these are so underdeveloped it’s laughable.

Your spending time trying to get links and traffic to a website that visitors will only spend 2 seconds on!

Mere shadows of what a review/conduit site in Chris’s teachings should be. Think outside the box and create something remarkable, something worth linking to.

and the ‘White Hat’ approach… It’s still SPAM!

  • 94 Brent // Jul 19, 2009 at 8:32 am

G’Day Chris, I have been using the AL software with wine and Linux, works fine. I also use Firefox so those waiting, don’t.

I recognized immediately that the first post by anyone else using the same top poster name would cause the link to change again. Which is why it’s only a grey hat technique and why you should choose a name about 1/2 way down the list.

Folks, these links are for the search engine robots not human click throughs. They are to get a better ranking for your site so they appear higher in the SERPs and that’s where you get your traffic from.

Always, always post a sensible, relevant comment regardless. If you are not contributing to the conversation then you probably won’t get your comment on the page.

In addition, even a nofollow link on a good comment is likely to get some traffic from people, if you get a link in the top commenters list then you’ll also benefit from some search engine traffic.

If you leave a rubbish comment, because you’re lazy, then regardless of which method you use it’s spam.

  • 95 recession // Jul 20, 2009 at 1:33 pm

Why not just use the software to find the high page rank sites without the no follow tags and just post a comment that way instead of hijacking another username? You still have a backlink from a high page rank site and everyone is happy.

  • 96 Mark Thompson // Jul 22, 2009 at 5:32 pm

    Chris,

Good call on pulling AL, as marketers we work hard to get a good reputation (there are not many with a good reputation!) , it can only takes one decision to wreck all the good work.

You were kind enough to send me a review copy, I feel that I should have voiced my fears to you when I tested it instead of just declining to promote it to my members.. I didn’t and for that I apologize, maybe if enough people had you’d might have focused on the white hat part of it. … sorry

You are one of the good guys and i know you’ll come out with a top notch IM product next time.

Don’t let all the crap get you down.

    Mark

  • 97 tina // Jul 22, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Whoa…I’m really confused now. Just received an email that you have decided to ditch Authority Loophole. While I can understand the reasoning with the original mix-up, that seems pretty drastic.
What does that mean for those of us who want to use it and have read all the training etc.?
Do you advise going ahead and using it or will it end up causing more problems than it’s worth??

PLEASE CLARIFY this. I am still very new at all this and DON’T want to start off on the wrong foot. The whole concept, in “white hat mode” made a lot of sense though and seemed to be a great stategy!!
    Thanks!

  • 98 admin // Jul 23, 2009 at 2:17 am

    Hi Tina

I’ll still support it, do the training for those who signed up, etc.

And it will still work – the software will always be functional.

But it’s just that it won’t be marketed starting August 1.

    Thanks,

    -Chris

P.S. This move on our end here will actually prolong the strategy’s viability.

  • 99 Daniel // Jul 23, 2009 at 6:28 am

Just read the email, Chris. It’s a shame things didn’t turn out so well for AL. I guess you live and learn. Cue the inevitable Chris Rempel bashing, but I for one know you’ve provided mega-awesome stuff in the past, and will continue to do so in the future, and I’m certain many other people feel the same way. I hope you have a nice day :)

    -Daniel

  • 100 admin // Jul 23, 2009 at 12:56 pm

    Thanks Daniel

Never mind the “bashers”. What they all have in common is that they’ll never leave the safety of the sidelines.

Because when you do, with it comes 2 things:

    1) People who like you

    2) People who don’t

At least when you take a stand for something, that’s the way it goes.

    It’s that simple.

    -Chris

  • 101 Garth // Jul 26, 2009 at 4:32 pm

That’s funny, because when I saw the first set of instructions, my first thought was, wouldn’t it make more sense to bookmark a good blog once I found it, and return and make decent comments until I legitimately am a “top commenter?” Besides the fact that the “grey hat” method involves impersonating a commenter who’s likely to return and see his name on a comment he never made, what if that commenter left comments I would not endorse, let alone want to be held responsible for?

Anyway, sorry you forgot to spell it out for everyone initially, but people have to take some responsibility and think things through before they post anything anywhere on the web.

I’m just glad I grabbed my copy of AL before you have to pull it. Do Follows are getting harder to find, and being able to find Top Commenter enabled blogs is definitely a handy tool.

Chris stop beating yourself up. No big deal. Anybody who’s given you grief over this you should ignore.

  • 103 Web Sites for Business // Aug 1, 2009 at 10:34 am

No worries. You addressed it quickly and throughly. I’m glad you’ve decided to limit further distribution of the Authority Loophole software… so that the technique is not overused.

  • 104 Barb // Aug 15, 2009 at 10:38 am

    Chris,
Just started using my copy of AL. I’m getting tons of N/A responses in the results column, which I believe means that no comments have been made on that page so we don’t if it’s No Follow?

Some have really good PR and I hate to pass them up … so I’ve been going to the homepage of the blog and looking at the View Source, looking for a no follow tag. Because I have yet to see one, I’ve either gotten very lucky or I don’t know what I’m looking for. Does it make any sense to go ahead and comment (and bookmark for future comments) if it’s marked N/A and just play the odds that it’s not NF?
