Affiliate Marketing – The SMART Way

Super-Affiliates Work Smarter – Not Necessarily Harder…

Affiliate Marketing – The SMART Way header image 2

The Fastest Way to Become a “Super-Affiliate” is to Copy One. Here’s How…

August 1st, 2009 · 202 Comments

You wanna know what’s sadly ironic?

What’s sadly ironic is that I (or any other experienced affiliate) could build and promote a site in 3 stinkin’ days that will earn more in affiliate commissions this year than most starry-eyed newbies would make even if they went ”full time” online – putting in 40 hours a week building sites, building links, etc.

Why?

Because I know what actually sells, and what kind of traffic to drive.

Because I’ve paid the price. I’ve gone through the ignorant years, working many late nights hoping, praying and crossing fingers for that mystical “windfall” from my unique ideas, my over-perfected implementations, my projects with “great potential” or “an untapped market”.

And even though I saw some results from my hard work (and I was working hard), it was just slightly eye-opening when, later on, I saw some of my most basic market tests in established, competitive markets make more money IN A SINGLE DAY than I’d previously be lucky to see all month.

It’s WHAT you sell, folks. Not how “hard” you try…

I realize that for the intermediates and advanced affiliates reading this, it’s like getting a lecture on the importance of eating and breathing. I know, I know. But what follows below applies to beginners and super-affiliates alike, and once you finish this blog post…

…I can guarantee that you’ll be losing sleep tonight :-)

Alright, so with that said – and now that we’ve established the important connection between knowing what to sell (and how) and your RESULTS – let me ask you a question:

What If You Knew What The Top 584 Super-Affiliates Across EVERY Major Network Were Specifically Selling, Exactly How They Were Driving Traffic, The Sites They’re Promoting - And Exactly How YOU Could Easily Copy Them?

Do you think that would be a “game-changer” for you?

Or as an intermediate or advanced affiliate – would that be valuable to you?

Unless you have a twisted pleasure for doing things the hard way and spending months in front of the computer, I’m guessing that you’re probably leaning towards saying “Yes”.

Let’s take a closer look at what this is…

This is going to officially “kick off” AffiliateArmory.com, and it’s a hell of a kickoff.  I’ll explain it as simply as possible…

With the help of numerous expensive research tools and over 500 working hours (I hired an entire team of people to help compile and create this data), I have totally reverse-engineered the following, and optimized each data set particularly for affiliates using PPC and organic search marketing…

* The Top 95 Super-Affiliates from CJ: Every product they promote, every keyword they spend money on, what their PPC ads say, how much they spend, every URL they advertise – as well as the organic competition level for each keyword.

* The Top 97 Super-Affiliates from ClickBank: (Same data as CJ…)

* The Top 98 Super-Affiliates from LinkShare: Ditto above

* The Top 37 Super-Affiliates from PayDotCom: Ditto

* The Top 101 Super-Affiliates from ShareASale: Ditto

* The Top 98 Super-Affiliates from LinkShare: Ditto

* The Top 102 Super-Affiliates from MaxBounty: Ditto

* The Top 54 Super-Affiliates from ClixGalore: Ditto

In total, we’re talking about hundreds of thousands of keywords – and thousands of different products – that the TOP GUNS on every major network are actively promoting.

And in addition to this, EACH keyword in every affiliate’s marketing campaign displays its organic competition level (keyword or keyphrase searched in quotations) - which is a gold mine for article marketers, conduit affiliates, SEOers, etc.

You can see why I had to hire an entire team of freelancers for this…

Collectively speaking, we are talking about the complete, in-depth, ZERO MYSTERY reverse-engineering of marketing activity that generates millions upon millions of dollars in affiliate commissions each year.

Oh – and the reverse-engineering of the industry-at-large’s top affiliates is just the first module of the market intelligence database.

Here’s what else it includes…

The Complete Reverse-Engineering of ClickBank’s TOP 264 Products/Merchants: Every keyword they spend money on, what their PPC ads say, how much they spend, every URL they advertise – as well as the organic competition level for each keyword.

I know we all love CB – and since it’s a network that particularly lends itself to high conversions (since the products are all mostly impulse purchases), and since there’s no approval process for each vendor – I thought you might like knowing exactly how the “big dogs” get their traffic :-)

And the third module of the market intelligence database is what I consider to be the ultimate brainstorming resource for ANY marketer…

In simple terms, it’s 500,000+ keywords spanning 800+ markets that Google directly recommends to its advertisers as additional keywords to try advertising with (based on their own internal data, so that tells ya something…), and I’ve taken this data and given it a very valuable twist:

In addition to Google’s data for each keyword (traffic volume, ppc cost, ad competition, etc.), I’ve added the organic competition value for EACH and EVERY keyword. Over 500,000 of them. And Good God - it was a long and tedious process even to hire a team to do this…

What this effectively does is it shows you ALL THE HOLES, the “easy pickings” in virtually every market.

Especially the ultra competitive ones.

For example – one of the markets covered was Life Insurance. Insanely competitive. Insanely high traffic value. These guys are spending $5+ a CLICK. Or more.

And with this single data set alone, there are over 20+ keywords that are highly targeted, getting apprx. 1000 searches a month – and have LESS than 5,000 organic competitors.

Considering just the AdSense revenue of a site using those 20 keyphrases as article topics ALONE, well – you can likely see the value here :-)

Each of these three modules will likely be sold individually as Market Intel when AffiliateArmory.com is fully up and running.

But very shortly, I’ll be offering all three Modules…

1. Reverse-Engineered Marketing Intelligence on the Top 584 Affiliates From Each Major Network

2. Comprehensive, Behind-The-Scenes Intel on Clickbank’s Top 264  Merchants/Offers

3. The Ultimate Brainstorming, Market “Infiltration” Treasure Map (500,000+ Profitable Keywords)

…for my subscribers as a bundled, “beta” release.

More details very soon.

Stay tuned…

Cheers,

-Chris

    HI there Chris,

Saw your email this morning and as soon a s I saw the words reverse engineered I had to open and see what you had.

I heavily into market intelligence and finding out what already works and making it better.

There’s fair few programs out there lately that will do all the hard shifting work that is needed to get to the bottom of these successful promotions.

I know from experience, it takes quite a lot of work and even with tools like PPCBully 2 and G C Detective – there is a huge amount of data that is hidden from you. Data such as Media Buys and more.

I will be looking out for email to see what you have up your sleeve.

It will save hundreds or hours work for sure.

    Thanks Chris

  • 25 Philip // Aug 1, 2009 at 7:10 am

This is incredible Chris; most of these guys have been very vocal and heavy-handed about having this exact advantage over everyone else and laughing all the way to the bank.

They have arrogantly said it : you’re either “one of us” or “you’re history,” we are going to take over everyone’s keywords and markets at will and completely dominate every single Market there is and there is nothing you or anyone can do about it.

Chris, how wrong can they be. The value of what you have achieved is immeasurable. Now the worm has turned. I would dearly love to be able to see the looks on all of those faces now? In a word; the vision is priceless. Thank you for the some of the best news and truly wicked tactics yet. I can’t wait to see what gems you have yet to produce.

Are you going to package each niche with all of the components i.e. review, template, keywords, etc.?

Or are you going to sell the individual pieces and leave it up to the customer to decide which ones they want?

Will any or all of the items have limited distribution?

Thanks, dude. Just don’t keep us waiting too long, OK? :-)

  • 56 Sonia // Aug 1, 2009 at 8:35 am

    Hi Chris,
Sound really great news. Can’t wait to see!

  • 58 Jo // Aug 1, 2009 at 8:43 am

I usually like Chris’ products, but this time I’m sorry to rain on the parade.

I HATE these reverse engineering stuff.

If campaigns gets duplicated Google slaps both! I’ve had it happen to me 3 times now and it makes me so angry. I spoke to my account manager at Google and this is a fact, so please don’t copy people’s campaigns. It takes a long time to get a campaign profitable and having someone just come in and ruin it for both of us is just plain criminal.
    capish!

  • 59 Jo // Aug 1, 2009 at 8:49 am

And one more thing…Google is well aware of KeywordSpy and SpyFu and they are both under investigation by Google. My account manager made it very clear that Google frown upon their ‘service’. It’s just stupid to think that Google will allow that sort of thing to go on.

  • 60 Norman // Aug 1, 2009 at 8:51 am

This all sounds GREAT but I agree with Sonia about an abc of putting it to the best use.

No doubt all the very same top marketers will be in on this data too – when they find out about it! You will need to invent a Guru Blocking device to keep those pesky blighters away :-)

  • 61 Chris // Aug 1, 2009 at 9:01 am

Yes. In my life, and i hate to admit it, most of my achievements came first emulating someone successful – in various endeavors. This is what most top musicians and athletes do! Why not marketers?

When? I need this yesterday! I’ve been wanting to have this type of analysis of what it takes to really succeed in the affiliate space, but when I started doing the research myself, and appreciated the size of the tasks involved to do it properly, I realized I’d have to wait and hope somebody else with more resources would do it for me and sell it to me. Thanks for being the first (and no doubt the best – no doubt the copy cats will be hot on your tail as usual) and surprising and delighting me each and every time you release a product. I am holding my breath for this one…

    Chris,
I know exactly what you are talking. Few years back I was hunting for the so called golden niches with no competition. Though it works in adult niche, mainstream was a difference story and I was hardly making any money. Then, one of your best selling $14 product from VIP series came out. (May be you still remember my pm at WF complaining about your post in the WarRoom). That product changed the way I do things in mainstream.
I am not a making thousands of dollars in mainstream yet. However in the last three weeks, I made over 3k with ClickBank in highly competitive niche.

“I’ve added the organic competition value for EACH and EVERY keyword. Over 500,000 of them. And Good God – it was a long and tedious process even to hire a team to do this… ”

And completely useless due to the fact that only the first SERP matters.

“And with this single data set alone, there are over 20+ keywords that are highly targeted, getting apprx. 1000 searches a month – and have LESS than 5,000 organic competitors.

Considering just the AdSense revenue of a site using those 20 keyphrases as article topics ALONE, well – you can likely see the value here”

Yeah, but it would take a year or more to get enough trust to rank for any. That’s not how we build adsense sites nowadays.

PPC data? Might have some use if you have a solid backend and an account with good history. Otherwise you cannot compete with those high bid prices.

If you didn’t figure out by now which markets work today or how to gather competitive intelligence for yourself, you are in trouble.

Bottom line: You cannot buy yourself into riches without infrastructure, cashflow and a brain. Not to mention personal power, the drive of everything. Without these you might just end up procrastinating on a bunch of data fueling your analysis paralysis.

  • 87 Stephen // Aug 1, 2009 at 10:58 am

I have to wonder though Chris if the Adwords keywords are of much value. I ask because there are so many intangibles like landing page age, quality score and more make a huge difference in what the Adwords PPCer is paying for those keywords.

They may be paying $1.50 per click on a particular keyword and that price is low enough for them to make a very nice profit. I could know this persons keywords and landing pages and try to copy them to a T and Google could charge me $5.00 per click due to the intangibles that give the other guy a price point that makes them a lot of money.

  • 99 admin // Aug 1, 2009 at 12:16 pm

@Jo (#58) – The idea here is to simply see exactly what’s profitable. What products to promote, and what keywords to focus on.

I’ve designed it for both PPC and Organic marketers, but with an emphasis on organic.

And that is the key difference here between this data and other sources (like SpyFu, KeywordSpy, etc.).

NOBODY has created extensive reverse-research that organic marketers can use to EASILY see what’s not only profitable – but what keywords can be ranked for effortlessly.

I never condone “exact” copying, but I DO condone finding out what works, and then applying it in your own way.

    Cheers

As usual, money makes money. For those who cannot afford high priced PPC this soon to be available info wiil need to have a different twist than expected.
Nonetheless, that same info wil be used by those who can afford high tickt PPC and if misused drive up prices even further.
Considering the unfair advantage the big guns have with Google PPC pricing standards and the Google slap for copycats, we all have to use this coming info [readily available but required deep analyses] in a totally unique way.The first way is with SEO ‘d Adsense sites by the hundreds by each of us reading this.Another way is producing our own product relevant to keywords rather than keywords relevant to the product; there is a difference.
Of course there is linkdomain strength where backlinks from sites that have relative keywords will drive traffic and sales.
I can go on and on but let’s see what develops with this new product in content and usability,
    before we tear it apart.

@Sally (55) – For the actual affiliatearmory site, everything will be individual, with the capability of packaging for combined pricing advantages.

  • 107 admin // Aug 1, 2009 at 12:39 pm

@ “Sgt Brutal” (77) – Everyone, let’s welcome the angel of cynicism on board…

    A few things:

    1. The “first” SERP isn’t the point. The point is rankability. The less overall serps for an exact-match keyword, the better. Read up on the basics of SEO, seargent.

    2. PPC is all about relevance. That IS the basis for quality scoring, etc. But that’ beside the point. The fact is, even aside from Adwords, knowing what keywords are profitable is REQUIRED for success in search marketing in any capacity.

Organic, PPC, etc. You need to know either way.

    3. “Trust Rank”. Wow, you certainly speak from a lack of experience.

I don’t know how you’re building links (where it takes a year to get indexed/ranked well), but it must be a lot different than what I do.

Most of my sites will pop up in the first 3 weeks and run strong for about 6 months before re-promotion is required if it’s not a user-gen type site.

Just though I’d add some realism to the cynicism…

    -Chris

  • 108 admin // Aug 1, 2009 at 12:44 pm

@Bill (104) – As I stated on the blog and in the comments, this data is specifically modified for ORGANIC marketers, not just PPC.

    That is the difference.

Also, a major part of this is WHAT they’re selling, and how. Seeing the offers AND presells that the top dogs are using is gold.

That, along with their exact keyword targets and so on, makes for some pretty formidable intel.

What it breaks down to is that if you “get it”, this is a goldmine.

If you’re stuck believing the naysayers, or think everything is impossible (which it IS NOT), then don’t bother doing anything.

In the meantime, myself and others who actually use this data will be cleaning up.

It’s still the wild west, folks.

Don’t let the speculators who need a reason to justify their lack of results get you down.

Remember the “Hype VS Reality” post…

    -Chris

  • 111 MichaelZ // Aug 1, 2009 at 1:04 pm

    @admin,

I did not even know there was an “angel of cynicism” I learn something new everyday.

Maybe I should start studying the Canadian cosmology, eh?

It took me a long time to realize, I was selling the “wrong” things online and that if I just sold what people wanted, I would make a lot more money. I would be very interested in seeing what successful marketers sell successfully. And seeing what keywords they use to do that. There is always a new way to use that information.

Out if curiosity I had a look at your site. Now I have a question!

Don’t you think your potential customers will be put off because you use the wrong ‘your’ in the title of your giveaway report? Or is it a deliberate ploy to draw attention to it? Or have you tested the difference and found the ungrammatical version works better?

It appears folks have a varied attitude towards ‘reverse engineering’ but I worry about those who think it just means ‘copy’…
As you have stated through all your material (yes I started way back with Lazy Marketer) original content is vital, getting inspiration from what is working already is just common sense, as long as you make it your own original piece..

It would be cool if the data also showed how many searches per month vs. how much organic competition.

In other words, it would say:

(keyword) > (searches per month) – (competition)

  • 130 admin // Aug 1, 2009 at 7:28 pm

    Amir,

    It does show that.

You can compare, sort and organize each data set based on search volume, cpc, ppc competition, ORGANIC competition, keyword, and so on.

It also displays stuff like ppc ad positions, the ad title, description(s) – and – landing URL.

    Like I said – this is a goldmine :-)

    -Chris

  • 131 Jerry W. // Aug 1, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Looks like this should be some good stuff.

But, what I would rather see, in detail, is how you go about reverse engineering all this. How do you obtain this information? In other words, teach me how to do this myself. That way, rather than having the exact same information as the other ten thousand people that buy your product, I can research the areas or niches that I find and not be chasing the same products and customers that they will be chasing. You know, teach a man to fish, blah, blah, blah.

Unfortunately, this is where all the Gurus and How to Guides seem to stop short. It’s kind of like they take you so far, but stop short of telling you everything. It’s almost as if they don’t want you to know some of this stuff if you don’t discover it yourself.

I do appreciate all of the information that I have gotten from you in the past. So don’t be like the rest of them and stop short, teach us everything.

    Thank you,
    Jerry W.

@Harry – There is a lot of misconception about “saturation” in regards to this package.

There are SEVERAL THOUSAND products reverse-engineered.

    And over 1.2 MILLION keywords.

This is my second comment, but I have another question now that I’ve thought about it for a while.

Do you have a guesstimate as to when this will go live?

The reason I’m asking (and it probably applies to others as well) is this sounds so good that I’d table a couple of other things I’ve been planning in order to save my pennies for your products.

At least I would do that if the wait is two or three weeks or so, but not a couple of months or more.

So, can you give us a rough idea? Pretty please and a case of beer? :-)

  • 148 sgt.brutal // Aug 2, 2009 at 4:31 am

    1. SERP means “search engine result page.” First SERP ranking means being in the top 10 of a search engine result page. If you want traffic you want to position yourself in the top 5 or so for your targeted keyword.

To do this you only need to beat the first 5 players in the first SERP. The quality of competition on the first SERP has nothing to do with exact match or allintitle competition. You just need to beat the top ranking players.

    2. Agreed. But there are other factors that you cannot spy on, such as geotargeting, the account’s history, quality score, backend marketing. You cannot just jump in and take the whole campaign – at least not in Google.

    3. “before re-promotion is required…” That’s the point. I don’t try to get ranked with self hosted sites in niches where trust is required. I use trusted properties to build on and capture traffic. And to be honest, I don’t try to rank individual sites at all. I build and promote mininets.

Just to add more realism to realism…

    Hi Chris,

This sounds like another very good product of yours coming up. The thing I hate about your launches is the waiting – you whet my appetite, then make me wait for another week.

My only question is how valuable some of this information will be once you have released it. Where there were only 50 competition for a keyword, this could change very dramatically once this product is released and your purchasers all start attacking the same keywords.

I do realize that not everyone that buys a product of this nature actually does anything with it, and I do realize that not every purchaser will necessarily attack the same keywords, but it could make the difference when the scales are tipped in a couple of niches by the sudden influx of new competition.

I am not sure how this would be handled, since you don’t have any actual control over the selections of the people who purchase your product.

Perhaps my worry is a waste of time. I will have to wait and see.

    Good luck with the launch.

    Hey everyone,

Chris is at it again. Seems like a killer product but dont’ be fooled. There is work involved in implementing, so if you are out to find an automatic business – this is probably not it.

And don’t bother posting in your website with the hope of building a quality “back link” as they are all “rel=”nofollow” links.

What this means is that you are not going to be building any SEO quality but do add a website, just for others to click on. Remember the types of things that others will find useful are affiliate marketing type sites.

I once gained an extra 150 affiliates for one of my products in a single day from a post here.

    Chris,

I am incredibly interested in what you have to offer. As usual, your presentation is top-notch. This could be a boon to people like me…the individual who is trying to make a go of this on their own, in their “free time” (ha!). If you can deliver quality information & statistics, that I can then take and run with, thus eliminating a lot of the research time…well, that would be fantastic!

  • 173 Ted // Aug 3, 2009 at 4:25 pm

    Chris,

I don’t see how this can be done? I mean without spending your own money to test every single offer with every keyword it’s impossible to know which offers are converting the highest without some sort of guess work involved.

  • 174 Portrait Poses // Aug 3, 2009 at 6:26 pm

It sounds like an incredible resource. Like Barry above, I also wonder about the diluted affect of a massive release.

However, I eagerly await the next announcement.

  • 177 derek // Aug 4, 2009 at 8:17 am

    Chris,

First, I’d like to say that I find your thing here, a nice read. In fact, the day you posted hype vs reality, I was in the midst of a conversation about that same exact thing. People follow hype when it’s not warranted. Anyway, I’d love to see what you got here. Give me a shout when it’s up.

  • 178 Joss // Aug 4, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Sounds like GREAT product, I’m looking forward for more details!

  • 179 Jappe // Aug 4, 2009 at 3:41 pm

    Chris,

Can you please explain where you got the “The Top 95 Super-Affiliates from CJ”, “The Top 97 Super-Affiliates from ClickBank” info?

I´m sure Clickbank (or any of the other affiliate networks) has not provided you with info about who their top affiliates are?

So how can you claim to have info about the top affiliates ?

  • 180 Home Business Infopreneur // Aug 5, 2009 at 7:45 am

It will be interesting to see how many of the Top Affiliates will be the same people. Very curious to see how this all pans out.

  • 181 Make Money Affiliate Marketing // Aug 5, 2009 at 8:38 am

This is going to be killer info for anyone wanting to cut down on the late nights digging for niches.

I feel sorry for the suckers that are going to see competition popping up in their secret niches.

Leave me off your intel list please. JK.

Can’t wait to see the product.

I am dying to see this – I am also dying to know about the $1000 commission invester’s product! I am putting together a continuity program now, and will stop the presses to build it around this product. I know you’re busy, but I would greatly, greatly appreciate that info as soon as you can. You help us out so much with your solid info! Thanks

  • 186 Philip // Aug 8, 2009 at 12:39 pm

Chris this is so exciting I had to come and check in again to see what’s happening. It is still the biggest breakthrough around. Great job with the reverse engineered Marketing Intelligence on those 584 Super affiliates and Guru Markets, Niches, Keywords and Clickbank products. Awesome skills!

Chris, speaking of which; here is some good news as well. If any of your readers are into Article Writing Software for getting their Article Marketing on steroids and speed. Don’t buy any of the numerous offers out there just yet. Before you try out a FREE version developed by Matt Callen called “Article Apps” just Google Search “Article Apps” I checked and its very easy to find. Look no links! haha!

Chris; thank you again for all the great resources for Lazy Marketer, Loophole and everything on your blog.

I just bought your ebook and I have to say, its my best investment so far…I have bought tons of them, some of them work, some of them don’t. I am currently averaging $100/week with all the strategies combined that I got from all these ebooks I bought…Of course, $100/wk is not a good considering the amount of time I spend working on it…so I am sort of desperate…which lead me to buying your ebook…I have to say, I have never been this excited…I am seeing the light and I will implement these tactics first thing tomorrow morning…Your methods are by far, the best ones I’ve ever learned…Buy the ebook of this guy and you will never regret if for sure!

    @sgt.brutal & @admin

Chris I can see the value in this to a lot of people who are still trying to piece stuff together…. and find a market.

    How ever…

I have to agree a bit with what sgt.brutal brought up… and yes this is a cynical way to look at it but…

1.) Traffic doesn’t matter conversions matter… Keywords with low competition that can be ranked well for may or may not convert… (by convert I mean take visitor and get them to buy your offer). Often times there’s a reason why no one has SEO’d a term yet.

2.) SERP SLERP what ever you wanna call it… IMHO the first (3) results are all that matters for any keyword organically. As more page real estate is being taken up by paid results at the top (often 3 ads now) users are no longer going below the fold for organic results. Well over 60% of all organic clicks are going to the top 3 organic results. It’s not a get to the 1st page game anymore.

3.) To check if you can rank easily for a key term look at the allinanchor that’s going to give you which sites have the best link campaign for a term. If the top 10 sites are the same or close to it with and without allinanchor then it’s possible that the term has been seo’d already…. Dive deeper into their back links.

I don’t personally see the value in knowing how many sites are indexed that have used the keyword in question which is what you’re getting when you do an exact match search with quotes.

Just for other readers of this I am a customer of Chris’s I have bought some of his products in the past.

I just don’t quite agree 100% with the reasoning here about how easy you could rank… and if you can rank whether you’ll make money or not.

Everything else aside I have memberships up the wazoo to do competitive intelligence research and I’m sure what ever this will cost will be a fraction of what I’m paying each month…

There is a lot of power in what you speak Chris. If only the everyday guy/girl could drill down on what information the most high gods of the Super Affiliate Circle bathe themselves with every day.

The awakening is foretold. You are the messenger.

  • 192 Knilles // Aug 17, 2009 at 9:34 am

Chris, can you give us an estimation about when AffiliateArmory.com is launched?

I am especially interested in the optimized HTML and WP sites, since building good quality, converting sites isn´t my strongest point.

Finding markets and how to promote them is more in my alley. I already have some sites up and running on a Hostgator reseller account and there is space for a lot more sites ;)

It would be even better if there will be CPA offers on sites where we can choose from on Affiliate Armory, since I am having a lot more succes with CPA offers then with just ´normal´ affiliate offers.

Whats interesting to me is, aff networks carry the same data. If they know you and know your not a scammer affiliate – they can give you the same advice and really kick you off in a money making direction. Do they? Nope, because they keep it for them selves.

Looking forward to what you come out with!

Hi , chris i read the lazy markerter , which was good , this sounds interesting , off the point a bit you said somewhere that its possible to rank well where the competition is 50,000 how can this be done ?

    thanks
