It’s Time to Draw a Line in the Sand…

January 12th, 2010 · 112 Comments

I swore I wouldn’t publish one of those cliche “New Years Resolution” posts - so hopefully this is received without the usual disregard that we all have towards “resolutions”…

(I’m sure most of us have an old treadmill or an “Ab-Master 3000″ or whatever rotting away in the basement as a result of a well-intended resolution at some point. Ha!)

So I’m going to be pretty honest and direct in this post.

And it’s probably going to offend a lot of people. But hopefully the end result is that, for a small few, reading this is what will make all the difference.

There’s been a lot of people now who have gone full-time as a result of starting out with my courses, and that’s very flattering. But it’s not really because of me - regardless of how clever I think I am. I’m just some jackass on the web. The real reason these folks have gone full-time is because of THEM.

(They actually tried, and treated this like a business – and not just an “opportunity”…)

But there’s many more who buy stuff for whatever reason, and instead of genuinely applying it to their business – they literally find every possible excuse why they shouldn’t try.

And as a teacher… quite frankly it’s really disappointing to see…

On the good side, usually once a week or so I’ll get an email from someone who tells me about a success they’ve had with “my” strategies - and my favorite emails (and blog comments) are from people who’ve followed my stuff, and then realized that it really was “that simple” all along. That there’s no “secret” – it was just a matter of clearly understanding what to do.

(Hell – there’s even a small group of customers/students that are now way outperforming me at my own game. Which is sort of a kick in the pants and a compliment simultaneously).

But for every email I get like that, I get probably TEN like this…

———————————

“Hi Chris,

It’s been 3 weeks now and I’m STILL not making any money with my 3-page site with terrible content that I’ve spent 5 minutes on and built 1 link for!

I really needed to make $20,000 by next weekend so I could pay off all my unsecured consumer debt and that really expensive seminar I just attended.

What a scam. I want a refund!

(So I can buy even more marketing courses from some other guy and refund those, too!)

Sincerely,

Mr. Delusional”

———————————

(Yes, I added a slight trace of sarcasm added for “effect” – but that’s the underlying reality of the situation in almost every case.)

Now I know that there’s two sides of the fence. As marketers, we’re responsible for making accurate claims and painting a fair picture of what our products actually “do”. I’ve always tried to be accurate and avoid hype with my stuff in this industry, and it’s something that I continue to try and perfect.

(It’s a bit of a tightrope act – because your stuff won’t sell unless you make it exciting and show the “numbers”, and you have to balance that with being realistic…)

Anyway – what I’ve come to realize is that there truly are two different “camps” of people in this industry:

1. Business Builders

2. Opportunity Seekers

And the opportunity-seekers outnumber the business-builders 10 to 1. Or at least that’s how it seems.

Now, “opportunity seeker” is a term that defines a few different things (and it’s not necessarily bad), so for the sake of clarity, here’s the Chris Rempel Definition of “opportunity seeker” within the context of this blog post…

———————————————

Opportunity Seeker: Someone who wants the “thrill” of success, but (deep down) isn’t ready – or willing – to work for it. They prefer “magic bullets” to business models, and would rather be entertained than actually instructed.

———————————————

These are the people that truly can’t be helped until they’re ready to take responsibility for their own actions and do whatever is necessary to accomplish their goals.

No amount of “coaching”, courses or anything else will work – because THEY won’t work! It’s that simple. They waste others’ time, their own time and they’re an energy drain.

And for that reason… today I am drawing a line in the sand.

If you fit the profile of an “opportunity seeker” as described above – and if you’re not willing to take things seriously and actually follow-through on what you start, then please do both of us a favor and unsubscribe.

Seriously – please get off my list if you’re just here to waste your own time and mine.

Because from this point forward, I only want to invest my time, money and energy into people that have the will to act. People that realize that there will be inevitable challenges and trial/error along the way, but who are willing to persevere that because they know what their goals are.

(Instead of finding someone or something to blame – resting on the temporary “comfort” of an excuse).

You can do phenomenally well in this business.

I can’t believe how much harder it is to run a “real” business in the “real” world when you compare it to something like affiliate marketing, ebook publishing and so on. Hell, I almost spend as much time dealing with the endless bullshit from my 3 revenue properties as I do running my internet “empire” with hundreds of active sites!

And I (maybe) clear about a grand or so each month in positive cash-flow from my properties. (Yeah, I know it’s more about the equity – but still…)

Think about how much harder it is to start even something like a little sandwich deli than it is to start building a serious empire online.

You’ve gotta deal with employees, food inventory, expensive leases, insurance, endless paperwork & government interference, advertising, banking & financing – and you probably won’t clear a profit for at least a year! And even when you do start making money…

…how much could you possibly take home for yourself?

Compare that to building even THREE authority affiliate sites in one year and actually putting in 8 hours a day of link-building, JV’s, etc.

It’s a joke. You can hardly even compare the two. And you’d be profitable almost right off the bat (and likely at the 6-figure mark by the end of the year).

Which, by the way, is why most people who do well with IM are often ex-traditional business owners. It’s a breeze for them once they get the fundamentals. And there ain’t no secret method they’re using, either.

It’s called GETTING STUFF DONE. Even if you don’t know “how”. Learn. Use Google. Use your HEAD. Think. TRY.

You’ll be amazed at how fast things start to turn around for you when you simply accept the fact that the only “hard” part of this business is getting down to work and making progress. (Yes, there’s initial learning curve in terms of marketing, but most opportunity-seekers literally know TOO much… and it’s time to start actually using what they know.)

Here’s an amazing example:

Next month I’m going to be interviewing a guy who is a total inspiration to me.

Most of you haven’t heard of him. (Although, not for long…)

He’s a perfect example of someone who simply put into action the things he’s learned, and as a result, he now runs a completley digital business that has recently surpassed the 7-Figure level.

He’s only been doing this for a few years.  Much less time than myself.

AND…

(This is the part where I get to “stick it” to all the whiners reading this)

HE’S BLIND.

Blind, as in can’t see anything. Born that way.

Can’t see the sites he’s building, or what they look like. Can’t use so many of the tools and resources that we take completely for granted.

And yet he’s built an online business (just imagine yourself doing this without being able to see) to a level that most “gurus” and teachers haven’t even attained with years of experience and, of course, the advantage of being able to SEE.

Now, I dunno about you guys, but this guy’s story essentially shoots down EVERY excuse I’ve ever received (as well as every excuse I’ve ever made myself).

Oh – you have a full time job and it’s hard to “make the time”?

Try doing it blind. (And amazingly, you have time to watch TV, drink beer, play video games, etc.)

Oh – you don’t like how long it takes to produce good content?

Try doing it blind. (Aside from the fact that good content pays off for years.)

Oh – you sometimes get confused about keyword research and choosing a niche?

Try doing it blind. (Even though it’s literally as easy as looking at what’s hot and copying a business model).

I could go on and on, and please understand that I’m not ragging on anyone, either. I make excuses, too – we all do. And even though I certainly didn’t have it “easy” when I started, I know that some of my readers are truly in rough situations.

But I would argue that being BLIND truly takes the cake. If that guy can do it – how many excuses do we really have left to “rest” on?

(So stay tuned for the interview, which I’ll be doing when I get back from Cuba at the end of Jan or early Feb).

—————————————–

So this is it, folks.

The line in the sand.

Are you ready to actually build your business – creating a life for yourself and your family that’s full of options and with far less limitations?

Or are you content being armed with an excuse for every occasion… but where the only thing you have to show for yourself is and endless saga of “victomhood” (with an ever-dwindling audience)…

The choice is yours.

But please realize that I only have time for those who take this – and themselves – seriously.

Here’s to one hell of a new year in 2010.

Let’s make the most of it. And let’s be grateful for the things we take for granted…

Cheers,

-Chris

Chris, this is probably the main reason I’m a loyal follower of yours. Because, I need this kick in the butt from time to time. I consider myself a business builder because I make money online, but from time to time I fall into the trap of seeking opportunity. Anyway, keep being you, and don’t ever be afraid to tell us like it is. We need it, and I know you have our best interest at heart.

“A friend loves you like you are, but a mentor loves you too much to let you stay where you are.” – don’t know

    Let’s move forward in 2010!

Chris a more powerful statement could not have been than this one. Each and everyone of us at some point has made excuses for our lack of action.

I will never forget the day that you walked into my office holding my web development flyer. To think I almost blew you off as “one of those how to get rich on the internet” guys.

I love your straight shooter attitude towards this industry and your code of ethics in business. Working with you on Affiliate Genie has taught me so much about this industry and the people in it. Although the people that you are referring to as the “opportunity seekers” are a fact of life in every business.

When I was in retail I came across the same kind of people that were unwilling to actually do something so they blame the product and demand a refund.

Imagine a “contractor” going out and buying all the latest power tools and then complaining all day because they have no work and the little job that they bought the tools for did not build itself. The solution in these peoples minds is return the tools.

As if the tools were the problem!

I have been providing the support to our Affiliate Genie customers which has been a daunting task at times, to say the least. But there is a light at the end of tunnel. Not all people out there are the opportunity seekers, each day I get emails from people using Affiliate Genie and are asking legitimate questions. When I look at their sites they are really implementing the tool and using your coaching. It is a welcome change to the influx of complaining emails.

I just want to give a shout out to the Business Builders out there using Affiliate Genie to tell you to keep up the good work.

Affiliate Genie did not build itself because we bought a PDF online and read it. We planned, developed, beta tested, more development, research, marketing, more research, more testing and after launch we didn’t just sit back and complain about the results we followed up and released a quick update addressing inquiries and bugs.

It is a business of it’s own now and still requires constant work to maintain and keep moving forwards.

Well that’s enough of a rant. Chris I look forward to working together for years to come as well as working with some of the great customers we have and watching them use our tools to develop great things for themselves.

One thing else worth mentioning is making a plan and sticking to it. There are so many “systems” out there that actually work, but you have to be dedicated. It’s so easy to just jump from one system to the next when you fail to see any profits. If you pick a system and stick to it for at least six months, chances are you’ll be making money.

Great statement Chris, that’s an awesome way to kick off the New Year. Filter out the flakes.

    Chris,
Excellent! Not only will I keep this in mind to remind myself of watching the foxes eating the vine, but I am also going to use this exact example in my “life skills” classes which I present in my day job. Can’t wait for the interview!
    Thanx Chris

OUCH… and thank-you… I just remembered how much, time, effort and money I spent on SEO and IM tools, courses and software taking up space on my hard drive… how much time have I wasted checking my stats and my sales?

These sites and this business doesn’t build itself…

Thanks Chris for the hard (caring) words… I need to be reminded of this often.

    Best wishes man

    Hi Chris,

Great insights man. I completely agree that business owners and even organized corporate types kick ass at IM.

Treating IM like a business is something i’ve been doing more of in 2010, I rarely make excuses, I acknowledge my laziness and therefore outsource, but proper organization and task management is so crucial, particularly with the Conduit Method for example.

Its still early days for me, but i’ve seen some ridiculous success with one of my sites in a niche you recommended, so I’ll be knuckling down to create a system for mass scaling!

Looking forward to the interview next month :)

  • 9 Pat // Jan 12, 2010 at 5:55 pm

Chris – oh boy…do I understand what you are saying. My 19 year old son started to lose his vision at 13. By 15 he was legally blind. Despite this, he has a wonderful girlfriend, has a part time job, is going to college next year, is a very ethical guy, was an 2010 Olympic Torch Runner in Nov/09, has a earned his blue belt in Karate, competes in Karate tournaments…AND HE WINS IN THE TOURNAMENTS. (Needless to say, the judges don’t usually expect him to win, but they sure are impressed when he does). Oh, and he also teaches Karate to younger students just starting out. He’s done all of this because of his decisions to not be the effect of his condition, but to win anyway, and not in spite of it, but because he simply acknowledges the condition and then just goes ahead and achieves what he wants to achieve. Easy. :)

Great posting by the way, thanks for putting it up there. I’m a big fan, and am currently working hard on getting some sites up right now using Affiliate Genie. I will be letting you know when I achieve my first sale, count on it amigo. Keep up the great work and the honesty.

Thanks Chris. Your post is like a long drink of iced water in a steaming jungle of hype. Enjoyed reading it and took it to heart.

  • 11 terrance // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Cool, looking forward to the interview. Any idea on a release date for affiliate intelligence?

  • 12 Edwin // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Chris, great post and a real motivational one too.
I went 100% internet business last year as before i had also a mug printing business and did IM on the side but the advantages of IM are so much larger that I decided to focus only on that.

Looking at 2009 I have been both a business builder as a seeker but then in a good way :)

One of the things I learned is not to try and do all myself. Things like backlink building…I am a cheap skate at times and I do blame me being dutch for it but one of the things I will do a lot more in 2010 is outsourcing.

    Nice post Lone Ranger :-)

  • 16 Fred // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:09 pm

    Chris,

Good post and I agree with most of it, but I have a different perspective. Why can’t you do both?

I signed up for the Magic Bullet, but I see it for what it is – an efficiancy tool. If I can work smarter not harder, I can get more done. I know there will still be a lot of work involved and I have no problem with that. But if I can create 5 sites (and add tracking and create PPC campaigns) in the time it would normally take me to create 1, why wouldn’t I do it? I could then add all the SEO elements to it and start link building (using AMA and LinkVana). Most of the big PPC guys acknowledge that the best landing pages are the ones that site on great SEO sites.

Just because I want to be more efficiant doesn’t mean I’m lazy.

    Cheers,
    Fred

Yeah, blah blah blah. Time for this…time for that. Who has time?

I’m building one business after another! It’s not time to draw a line in the sand, man. It’s time to KILL IT.

Pick a plan, stick to it, do the steps, pour in your passion, and if it fails, it’s still better than what you got now – NOTHING.

I like Chris’s style, laying it out on the line. He’s made it, but like he implies (and outright says sometimes), he’s not the smartest guy, but he gets it done.

Time to get’r done. No time to draw pretty pictures :)

    Hey Chris,

Wow, great post. I was an opportunity seeker for way too long. Now I am more of a business builder, but still find it a struggle to FOCUS on money generating activities.

No more excuses, time to succeed in 2010.

  • 20 Roy // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:15 pm

This is why I have bought most everything you have produced Chris. Most other gurus are too busy promoting the latest “it” product to their massive lists without even knowing how the product works. It is sad really. I won’t name names but anyone who has been doing this for a while surely gets all of the emails from the big guys who seem to make their money by just promoting each others latest must have program.

Where you Chris, really seem to care about what you produce and promote. I have been on your list for quite some time and one of the things I appreciate most is that you don’t jump on every single bandwagon that comes out. Surely you could but you don’t and that says a lot about your character. You are one of the few guys who get my undivided attention when it comes to IM.

As a bricks and morter business owner who is slowly morphing into a full time IM’er I can say that your material, coaching and occasional kick in the arse have helped me greatly in my quest.

Therefor it must be clear: please let me stay on your list for a while. A very long while, I mean!

    Thank you for your support!

    regards,

A good point and all, but do you really think that a coach would be a waste of time for ‘those people’. More likely that’s exactly what a lot of dreamers need to make them realise how unfocused and inadequate their actions are.

Anyone wanting to experience motivation to the max might benefit from watching a DVD on special forces training. I’ve just seen part 1 of NZSAS, and it’s certainly given me a yardstick for action. How would anyone’s business be if they applied themselves like those dudes. No wonder they (usually) kick ass. Who wouldn’t with that kind of effort, in war or business. Interesting stuff!

Chris – I always enjoy reading your copy. You weave a good story into a plan of action for the reader. I suspect most “buy” and walk away not even realizing they’ve been “sold”. ..nice.

  • 25 admin // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:24 pm

    Gregg,

I somewhat agree, but all the coaching in the world isn’t going to help someone who’s there to spectate and be entertained… and not actually make progress themselves.

Special Forces guys signed up for that. And the whole training program is designed to weed out the flakes.

The whole point is that if you want it – you’ll get it.

    Coaching or not.

    Hey Chris,

That’s a good post and if someone takes offense to it, it’s because they are the ones who aren’t ready to dig in and make it happen for whatever reason.

You can only hope that at some point, what is actually required to build a fortune online is good content and related offers, and somewhere everything you’ve been saying…

    Kicks in.

Until then it’s people like the blind person you mentioned that you gotta let motivate you to keep on keeping on.

  • 28 Kent // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:28 pm

While I agree with most of what you have written in this post, there is one major thing you are overlooking.
You say that you are getting letters from customers who have put in some effort but not had success.
You then go on to say you must work hard at it and “do whatever is necessary to accomplish their goals”.
So why on earth have you labelled your website THE LAZY MARKETER .com ??
You sir are the one sho is misleading people.
It takes a lot of focus, concentration and persistence to achieve high levels of success.
You cannot be lazy and achieve it.
Is it any wonder that people get upset when they come to a site called The Lazy Marketer, buy a product, and only then are informed they cannot be lazy and must work hard at it.

  • 29 Sid // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:31 pm

    Chris,

That was a great post. Having been an opportunity seeker, I know exactly what you’re talking about. Any successes I’ve had have come from hard work, and hard work alone.

    Thanks!

  • 30 admin // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:33 pm

    Kent

The Lazy Marketer brand is defined as working smarter, not harder.

I’m guessing you’re new to the game.

You’ll eventually come to realize that everything takes work and effort – BUT – most people don’t do what’s most effective.

    And that applies to anything.

You still have to work hard.

It’s just that while one person is barely scraping by and working their ass off – another is still expending a lot of effort – but they’re making huge money as well.

What matters more than a domain name is what I actually sell and how I present it.

Maybe you should take a quick look at my offers and see exactly what I’m saying BEFORE people buy.

    -Chris

  • 31 Jonathan Gunson // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:36 pm

    Hi Chris

    Agree … BUT …

You know what? The larger part of the Internet marketing industry makes its money selling ‘Magic Bullets’ to opportunity seekers.

In fact there’s just been a huge product launch yesterday called exactly that. ‘The Magic Bullet’

    No wonder people get confused.

So while I agree that the real deal is to take continuous action and build one authority site after another, there’s an awful lot of info stating the opposite.

Authority mini sites is the end game – it’s the thing that just plain works.

So to anyone reading this … are you off to grab the latest $497 magic bullet? Give me a yell anytime, and I’ll wean you off the magic bullets :)

    Jonathan

Are you a mind reader? It’s exactly where I am at, and exactly what I needed to hear.
It is difficult and confusing to get going. I am such a newbie. I thought I would have to give up, I thought I was wasting time on Google, reading and learning. I am so glad I read this blog. I thought I was beyond help, but reading this makes me feel good, I am on the right path! There is ALOT to learn. Writing good content is challenging but I truly love it.
I am going to keep plugging at it. Thanks for the encouragement.
Can’t wait to launch my first site, I am brutally slow, but the next one will be quicker!

    Hey Chris,

As usual you tell it like it is. There is no magic button online because there is no magic in the “real world”. You have to work at it to succeed. Personally I wish all the opportunity seekers would just get out and leave it to the rest of us. Great post!

  • 34 John // Jan 12, 2010 at 6:43 pm

Chris, the many uses of excuses remain the mystery to most of the unexplored world.

Some say success is an “attitude”, some attribute their success to years of work with many white hairs and lost teeth.

The “secrets” you’ve just revealed will remain a mystery to most people because they drink from a half empty glass.

I have now seen the light thanks to you, and know that I need to be more professional and put more thought and effort into everything I do.

Late last year I faced my own line in the sand which has changed my life forever and I made a vow to become successful.

I have working on making this a full-time business since the turn of the year and, although it is early days to see the results I know it is the only way to do things.

Quitting and whining about problems is not an option for me any more.

  • 38 Terrence Neraasen // Jan 12, 2010 at 7:37 pm

    Chris:
Thanks for the appropriately timed and on the mark post. I guess I have been an IM Opportunity Seeker more out of ignorance or lack of experience than by conscious choice.

I know there are no shortcuts but I suppose I have been looking for them. I don’t want to focus on just anything to make a buck with Internet Marketing, so being an affiliate marketer promoting anything that has a chance of making me money is not appealing. Rather, I want to adapt IM to what I’m really passionate about, and that’s good health and financial independence for me, people like me, and even youngsters. Still today we teach nothing about entrepreneurship and making money in our educational systems.

Now I’ve learned a good deal about opportunities and application of Internet Marketing and marketing generally, over the past two or three years and your post made me realize I had better get organized and apply what I’ve learned (and learn more!) in a systematic way. I know that if I were to focus on building my business in the same way I got on with obtaining an education and doing my job, I’d just have to see progress and ultimately success.

I’ve seen quite a few “miracle systems” touted as the way to build a list and market a business that more than imply you can short circuit the process. None are really true and all end up costing a lot of money in advertising. And in my case, with not much to show for it. I suspect that the guys who advertise their 6 or 7 figure incomes in just a month or two have really spent years building their lists and finally found something that a bunch of their list members wanted. They don’t tell you that nor do they disclose their net income. I’ve seen one exception recently where an individual revealed he pulled in about $60K in a month and that he spent $30-35K in advertising to do so. That’s a good return on investment for sure but how many people have $30K to spend on advertising and the experience and expertise to be confident that they can get that kind of return? Only someone who has done what I know I need to do. An that is DO the work. Learn the craft. DO what you love and are passionate about.

    Thanks again.

Please be patient with me a little bit longer. I’ve got to catch up my past due rent before I’m able to pay for your information that I have been SO looking forward to purchasing so that I won’t have to work in excruciating lower back and foot pain any longer.

I am in SO much pain that I sometimes break down and cry in front of my coworkers. It’s very humiliating. I’ve taken so many painkillers that I’m afraid…my nose bleeds without warning at least once everyday lately…

    Hey Chris,

A stirring post I must say.

I have built a small business from the the ground up & whilst running it, in the last 3 years I’ve have literally been online for more than 2,000 hours trying to build on online business.

I agree with your comment that a previous bricks & morter business owner would find it easier.

Yes, certainly the concept of mind numbing frustration & endless hours of research does sit more easily to those who expect to do it.

For me, I work by a very simple principal that I read somewhere -

How to succeed? .. try hard enough!

After building 35 or so sites I’m now working on your Affiliate Genie.

To you Chris & all blog members, have a sensational year.

    Cheers,

I love reading your stuff Chris. Your straight forward, no nonsense style has helped me so much to stay focused and work on proven long term strategies rather than getting sidetracked by distractions like I did for so long.

Building long term assets is the softer easier way.

  • 51 Philip // Jan 12, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Hi Chris I love your stuff and your style. Like a lot of people I realize there is a lot of work involved in Internet Marketing and I do want to succeed. I even love working smarter and not harder.

However the reality is; that 90% of Internet Marketers out there just use us to profit from.

In the main we are treated as permanent customers for life? (cash cows)

What we don’t need is the large percentage of Marketers online-

    DUMBING US DOWN!

Making things so much harder for us by continually feeding us misinformation.

They purposely leave out vital information to keep us chasing and buying… I have followed a lot of plans to the letter and they do not work pure and simple- unless you buy the upsell?

And- sign up for the expensive monthly membership
And- the Year long course and mentoring program that cost $5,000 – $10,000 grand?
And/Or the closed private job for 15 grand?

I believe I speak for nearly all of us out here.
I get really frustrated and angry at the waste of lost time which I will never get back. Hours and months of effort again which I will never get back.

The loss off money which is hard fought and getting waste and depleted over time.

All of which I could be putting into much more productive efforts and products that deliver a complete business unit and well- deliver as promised…

I do agree with a former comment made earlier- you are one of a few voices crying in the wilderness.

Chris; we need more people like yourself and Dave Kelly.

It has taken me nearly two years to find you guys?

I am implementing MSN Loophole (you call it something slightly different?) and I have Profit loophole waiting in the wings.

I have the lazy Marketing resources as well

So you can know I am going to be back here on this blog and telling it like it is :)

Firstly I have not made a profit with MSN loophole (yet) I was worried. I got on the first page of Google and on Yahoo with my sites by adding H1 and H2 tags to them,

I was nowhere to be seen for my money sites in MSN an BinG?

I could not get my sites onto the first page of BING and that meant no traffic, zip ranking and/or sales

LOOK! one of my sites finally cracked it on the first page of BING today!

Check this out ! 1-10 of 99,900,000 results
I am at number 10 and am ecstatic.

So people I followed the plan and worked both hard and smart and- this site made it to the first page of BING (Msn) as promised.

Note: I did not write any articles, or get any backlinks from blogs, websites or link juice from forums, Squidoo, Social bookmarking sites, free ads, PPC or paid ads- or do any other thing than just implement this system!

Thank you Chris and Dave! I look forward to more of my sites getting the same or similar results.

With this awesome result; I can confidently say that that it is only a matter of a little more time
before I see some money coming in.

FYI when I first went to Bing there were no results for my keyword? I had to manually submit my Url to Bing before they would index it.

At first this did not happen. Bing did not accept my Url for whatever reason; finally after 3 months of angst and continually resubmitting it.

I finally showed up in Bing’s searches. BUT… I was the only thing showing as a cached page? All by myself? and- the link did not work?

Oh no! no traffic , no competition and no sales? Dead in the water…

Well you know what the new results are now. Check this out wow! 1-10 of 99,900,000 results.
Also it is a brand new site and the market is the highly competitive Golf Niche
( URL and site name withheld)

I can only guess that it has taken this long for everyone else’s Urls to show in Bing as well for the same reasons I experienced.

So persevere, do not give up and you will get the results you are working hard and smart to get :)

Chris thank you and Dave both again

Awesome post! You are right on. The big “secret” to making money online is W-O-R-K! But most people don’t want to hear that.

    Hello Chris!

Thanks for the kick in the pants. I have no idea what it will take to get my business underway as I am at the very beginning of the journey. I have been on your list for longer than I am willing to admit, and I continue to find it all so confusing. Why? Who knows. It can be the smallest thing which seems to be the obstacle for the moment. But, I have to continue on as there is really no other alternative. Your blog post points that out so clearly. Those obstacles are there for a reason and that seems to be the opportunity of learning how to over come them. Many times your blog posts have given me the ideas needed to overcome the obstacle of the moment. You have grounded me more times then you could imagine. Being grounded always brought focus back to my life, and that is true now more then ever. I have come to believe in you, for what you have tried to teach all of us has always been from your heart. Thank you! My goal for this year is to survive. That means only a few dollars each month, not the 6 or 7 figure numbers mentioned already. Those numbers will happen some day down the road. I look forward to reading your blog posts in the days to come. Thanks again.

Sorry guys it doesn’t work like that…

  • 61 Bobby // Jan 13, 2010 at 3:06 am

    Hey Chris -

    Thanks for the clarion call.

A while back I heard there were three types of people in the world – those who make things happen; those who watch things happen; and those who wonder what happened!

I have finally realised that, although I thought I was in either of the first two categories, I’ve been wallowing in the third!

Going about things the wrong way doesn’t help – having purchased most of your other products I finally got around to getting your Blueprint last night. (The printing stopped at 2 a.m.)

Additionally, I unsub’ed from tons “gurus” lists – the type hyping up and selling each others things – after realising that there was a whole lot of mis- and missing information in all their “products”.

Your message has forced me to re-focus and, like others on here, concentrate on only one method. Yours.

With a 5-hour plane trip ahead I am taking your products I have and going through them with a fine-toothed comb. This time starting with the Blueprint, rather than going backwards.

In the coming months I’ll keep you informed of how things are progressing – and maybe try to pick your brains sometime, too.

Thanks again for a wonderfully inspiring message.

Best wishes to all in 2010.

If you ever need anyone to hold the nail just call, because with the hammer you don’t miss.I believe totally what you say, it’s the old opportunist versus the entrepreneur mindset. Yes we all need a kick in the butt at times :-) . I dont know how many hours I’ve lost sitting here trying to make sense of different things. Usually it gets worked out. I just keep searchimg for the answer. I read Philips comment above and agree with what ha says about being treated like a cash cow by some socalled Guru’s that are only ever interested in selling you the next best thing on a daily basis. Surely money don’t come easy – and even on internett you surely have to WORK to get the business going – even more sometimes – it depends though the market you’re in.

I started my own business in the latter part of 2009 – and now three months later – I’m certainly not in the money yet – but it’s getting better though – but slowly.

I have a long term plan – so certainly not stressing with the fact that it haven’t taken of yet :)

  • 73 Daniel // Jan 13, 2010 at 5:42 am

    Chris,

You made a post quite similar to this before (business builders vs opportunity seekers), but the message is an important one and needs to be hammered into us =)

I’m sticking to doing one thing at the moment; building and promoting mini-sites. I realise now that one of my problems was a lack of consistency. I’m halfway through finishing another site and will be promoting it soon; just like I did last week, and the week before and the week before.

Like you said, getting stuff done. I’ve actually learned quite a lot just from building/promoting 3 mini-sites over the past 3-4 weeks, and no doubt I’ll learn more as I do more. I don’t do anything else at the moment, but once I see an initial “flare-up”, I will be scaling things up with authority sites and stuff.

I know I HAVE to do it at some point, but at the same time, I WANT to to it =)

    - Daniel

    This is a GREAT post!

While I think online marketing has to be accessible to new people (who dearly hope they can get rich overnight with no work), everyone has to start somewhere.

If they don’t figure out — within a few weeks, at least — that some steady work is usually required… well, I don’t know what to say to them. You really can’t get “something for nothing,” and that applies to anyone hoping to earn an income, online.

No one sets up a brick-and-mortar store and then just leaves the door open, hoping people will leave cash on the counter.

They make sure someone is there, working, at least during normal business hours.

Even people who have vending machines are on the road at least a few hours each week, adding products and maintaining the machines.

If there’s really a way to get rich overnight, or have a steady income with zero work at all… we’d all be doing it. Lottery ticket sales would plummet, because we wouldn’t need more money.

This is a really good post, and I’d like to see more marketing pros talk to us like we’re intelligent people. “Dumbing down” the ads (and the content) to appeal to the get-rich-quick crowd leaves the rest of us frustrated.

    Thanks for taking a stand.

  • 77 boat auctions // Jan 13, 2010 at 8:02 am

This post only reaffirms the overwhelming, undeniable truth that most everyone (especially IM’rs) don’t need more knowledge nearly as much as they need taught how to appropriate that knowledge. ..i.e. They need to be taught how to simply…DO.

Some of you may or may not agree with this but do you know what the greatest teacher EVER in the history of civilization said to his followers before leaving this planet?

I’ll give you the King James Version. The last thing he said before he left this planet was “..teach them to observe all things whatsoever I’ve commanded you.”

So what the hell does that mean? HE didn’t say ‘teach them all things’. He told them teach them
‘TO OBSERVE’… literally teach them TO DO all things whatsoever I’ve commanded. Check it out for yourself. (Matt. 28:20) I think he knew a little about human nature don’t you think?

That was 2000 years ago when Christ said that. I think he would be a brilliant internet marketer today. No doubt I’d pay top $ to go to his seminar.

I can tell you personally that in the last 45 days I’ve ‘observed’ (done) what I’ve learned specifically from one of Chris’ courses, and I’ve profited $5k…in under45 days start to finish. I made a simple 10 page affiliate site following the “lazy” model… and it works. The power really is in the doing.

Chris, you need to come out with a course where you simply teach your followers to observe 3 or 4 action steps…and be done with it. And that would be the whole and the entire and the only point of the course.

  • 78 Abe // Jan 13, 2010 at 8:08 am

I have almost all of your products and never asked for a refund. I am not making any money yet but I know I have a valuable folder named LZ.
I always loved your style of explaining the how and why of doing things and that is beyond of grasp of people who need the “do this and do that” sort of courses. When I read your lessons I don’t try to skip a word because I know that there is a bigger picture beyond it and more deeper insights than the word it self.

    Thanks Chris

There’s always going to be a disparity between what we know and what we do. The problem is that for the masses that disparity is glaring.

The problem that I’ve encounterd with learning is that its addictive….at least for me it is. The tendency is the more you know…the more you want to know. In the end you become like your high school guidance counselor who can wax eloquently on the best career choices….yet he’s a guidance counselor!

Those who make money seem to act more on what they know and they simply get results. The great news is that anyone can apply and get results..and if you’re blind you’re going to have a few more obstacles to overcome.

In the last 45 days I’ve specifically applied Chris’ “Lazy” affiliate principles to a 10 page site. It took 45 days from start to finish and its generated $5,000 in profit to date.

Chris, you may do well in developing a course that specifically teaches people how to simply DO! And that’s it. You may not get your list jumping up and down with excitement but isn’t doing the real ‘silver bullet’?

I say this because I personally had what I call a ‘doing disability’ for about a year. Everything had look perfect. I’ve since recovered not by drugs or any 12 step program but by simply doing. Great post!

The more I use AG, the more I love it. My problems with affiliate marketing are the same as before I bought – focus.

I like writing articles, but if the reviews are not there to link to, you can’t sell squat.

    The problem, dear Brutus…

Wow! that blind affiliate story really amaze me!
real good kick off for 2010!

    Hi Chris

Early in your post, you talked about the way that marketers portray their products. The fact is that most people are looking for the magic bullet.

They want something that only has 3 steps, and preferably, a premium option where you can pay extra and get even that done for you.

A marketer who offered a system requiring study, time and effort would quickly starve to death.

So, we have a constant stream of next big things and a never ending supply of people willing to buy them.

The sales letters for these make money online products range from highly misleading to blatant lies.

Most of these ‘marketers’ are downright exploiting people who they know will never do anything with their products.

I have now reached the point where just reading the word ‘launch’ puts my blood pressure through the roof.

Keep telling the truth Chris. You are a lone voice in the wilderness.

    Hi Chris

    Thanks for a great article.

I’m glad to say that I’m now on the ‘business builder’ side of the line but that hasn’t always been the case.

I went through the stage of being an opportunity seeker and became very disgruntled and gave up.

Then when sometime much later I reviewed Internet Marketing again I recognised that everyone had this magic bullet but it dawned on me that it was attention grabbing hype. Besides I didn’t think I had any technical skills. So I kinda gave up again.

Well fast forward to present day – It wasn’t until I was looking at another aspect of my life that I realised that I was the problem. It was my lack of effort and taking responsibility.

There is no magic bullet or easy solution, it’s a case of getting onboard and working on it. The more hours you put in the more you’ll get back

For those that haven’t dipped their toe in the water yet I hope that they re-read this article and see if they recognise anything of themselves in it.

Be patient, put in the work and stay focused

    Alan

Wow! Chris, This is great. But do you know what seems even greater than the Kick and the Line in the sand? This post has brought together a group of like minded eager people who desperately want to succeed using your methods Chris.

Could this be the start of the Chris Rempel / Aff. Genie followers forum? and I don’t mean in a cultish way. But when I look at my inbox and see all of the distracting information and most of it somewhat counter to your technique. You know what? I am going to delete it all to-day and unsubscribe to most of it. Might need A Webber and the like.
I have way more information from you than I need or can follow in the short term anyway.

As a group it would be great to have Mastermind chapters regionally, dedicated to Chris Rempel technique. In Boat Auction’s post he mentions an action step course. I like that idea. Just some thoughts.
Thanks Again, and please don’t count me out yet.

What can I say. Straight to the point and no B.S. I was one of the whiners for a couple of years until I made up my mind that I was going to concentrate on one niche, one product and stick with that for 6 months.

I wrote articles, built links, kept updating the website for six solid months every day! I did not read any more emails and quit buying all the get rich now schemes and it finally paid off!

Now I do the above, rinse and repeat…put into action what I have learned and stopped wasting time on all the B.S. noise on the net.

    Good luck

  • 92 Michael // Jan 13, 2010 at 5:08 pm

    But Chris, you don’t understand!

I’ve got to make that 20k by next weekend because I want to go to this really great seminar where they are going to show me how to do something really awesome.

The next seminar is where I’ll get the last piece of the puzzle to really start making it!

A wise mentor once taught me…

“You don’t need more information, because you’re only going to use 5 – 10% of it to be successful anyhow…it’s the 90% ACTION that you need more of.”

Great post Chris, straight shooting as always.

    Hi Chris,
another great post. I’m still plugging away using the methods I’ve picked up from you, and though progress is slow it is in direct proportion to the work I’m putting in!

So I’m with you, no magic bullet, just keep putting the work in an the rewards will come.

    Hi Chris

Thanks for this really inspiring article. I know very well what you are talking of. I finally took a lot action recently and have come up with my first product. By the way it has to to with your motto “work smarter – not harder” and aims at clickbank affiliates. If you are interested have a look at my site or drop me a line. I know that the site is not 100% perfect but I wanted to start with 80% rather than tweaking it indefinetely…

    Hi Chris

Thanks for yet another “Wake UP!” to remind me that I (and only I) am to blame for my procrastinating, perfectionism, and not “putting something out there”. I’ll be staying on your list, but I’m removing myself from all the others – just a lot of time wasting and distracting babel!

Hope 2010 is another great year for you.

I cranked out 3 websites in a few days…about 10000 times faster than my product site took me to make last Easter. I am ranking at the bottom of the first page for a keyword term, passing my own landing page. (See Lazy Affiliate Course by Rempel)
My other site is number 1 first page for a specific key word in the entertainment business (my other business).
Love Affiliate Genie. Love the Lazy Affiliate Strategy. (Love Jon Leger’s backlink products as recommended by Chris).

Ok, this is a Question for Chris or anyone who can answer the thing.
1st (before the Q) Chris, I really like your style and have gotten most of my ideas from you. So nuthin but the best to you.

Now the Q- What in the heck gives???
It is absolutely NOT difficult to get a page on the 1st page of Google I now have a dozen or so above the fold and several #1′s. That part is easy.

What is happening is that Google must not give real numbers or?
because as just ONE example; I am #1 for a term that Google says is 246,000 local search volume per month I have been #1 for 7 days and have 10 unique’s . (only ONE example I have many trust me).

What in the world is up with that. And no it does not take me an hour and a half to watch the TV show 60 minutes. It is not for some lame reverse term like CA Valley where the real search is Valley CA. Did that 6 months ago (still in page 1 by the way).

How can I find REAL traffic, with no traffic count lies???
If I can do that I could turn your methods into a goldmine because I understand how to get page 1 that part is a serious non issue.

    Thanks, Patrick

    Chris,
For some time now you’ve been one of the few IM Names that I’ve respected and believed in – the straight talking effect works with me!
Now I’m having to face up to being a confirmed “Opportunity Seeker” ? That description had previously seemed complimentary – you’ve rapidly erased that view…………
It must be maybe 10 years since Corey Rudl got me interested enough in this to buy his Accelerated Internet Wealth CD Set and since then I realise I’ve been a dedicated OS!

BUT – your line in the sand is the last straw; I don’t want to be an OS and I’m determined to kick the habit (it IS an addiction) and make a success of an OnLine Business.

Thanks for the shock treatment Chris, I have sufficient of your programs and instructions to start making a living with this, and have actually learned a Hell of a lot over the past decade (hard to believe it’s been that long)!
The sticking point has always been….. “Ouch, I’m stuck – don’t understand this part – Oh, look at this new product/launch/method/software over here….”
Well, your line in the sand has brought me back to Earth. I’m not sure yet if it will be Affiliate Genie or one of your Loopholes, but I’m busy collecting your material together today to work out a simple task list I can begin with.

Tim Ferriss has helped your message to get through as I’m just reading his 4 Hr Work Week and realising that “Eliminate, not Accumulate!” has to become my immediate mantra.

Thanks again, I WILL use Affiliate Genie and will be coming to you for comment as soon as I have my first site ready for dissection!!!

Now get back out there and Hang 10 for me,
I’m too busy changing my ways!!!

    John

Just on another note, Affiliate Genie….
You once sent out an email…(round the launch of Xsite Pro 2) saying how you use Dream Weaver cause you are use to it.

But if you were to start today you would use Xsite Pro.

I take it that now you have developed Affiliate Genie you do not hold the same view of Xsite Pro?

  • 109 admin // Feb 5, 2010 at 1:54 pm

My view on XSP has switched because it’s so exclusive to its own code.

There is virtually NO crossover for sites created with XSP.

I think it’s great for some beginners, but it’s an all-round site builder that is neither specific enough nor adaptable enough for intermediate/advanced users.

Dreamweaver is still the best all-round site builder by a mile.

Aff Genie is designed for ONE purpose, and it is the very best at what that one purpose is.

    Thanks

    -Chris

As someone who owns a little sandwich deli, I can tell you that my online business is way easier to run when I actually run it.

It’s amazing to me how many people fail to grasp the ideas of “doing” rather than “reading.”

Literally in 2 hours a day, one can build a really nice little empire without really doing much work. “work” in the traditional sense that is.

Youe comment on magic bullets vs business models is absolutely spot on! I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Cheers and thanks for being a great read always!

Yep this is inspirational. Chris you know how to say it how it is and I love that.

You’ve actually inspired me to “do” more…

Building site with AffGenie and Using Lazy Marketer as a guide…

So we’ll see how it goes, me thinks it will do really well!

    Cheers mate.

    Hi Chris,

Great post! I totally agree – people need to stop procrastinating and start doing! It’s really not that hard – just takes a little elbow-grease and the will to succeed. What everyone needs to realise is that they can do anything – anything in life. Seriously, what would stop you being able to do anything? If you put your mind to it, and work hard for it, you WILL get it!

So yeah, stop procrastinating, listen to Chris, and START DOING!

    To ALL of our success!
    Aussie Andy
